What Is Dyneema Rope?

Dyneema is the brand name for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibre, developed by DSM. Ropes made from Dyneema fibre are extraordinarily strong — up to 15 times stronger than steel on a weight-for-weight basis — while remaining lightweight enough to float on water. They are UV-resistant, chemically resistant, non-corrosive, non-conducting, and non-sparking. Teufelberger’s Dyneema rope products are engineered for demanding offshore, marine, rescue, and industrial applications where conventional wire rope presents weight, corrosion, or spark-hazard limitations

Key Properties of Dyneema Rope

  • Exceptional Strength-to-Weight Ratio

15x stronger than steel by weight. Dyneema ropes match the breaking load of a steel wire rope at a fraction of the mass — dramatically reducing handling effort and crane payload consumption.

  • Floats in Water

Density below 1.0 g/cm³ — Dyneema rope floats. Essential for marine and offshore applications where a dropped rope must be recoverable.

  • Non-Corrosive

UHMWPE does not rust, corrode, or degrade in saltwater, chemicals, or UV exposure — making it ideal for long-term offshore and coastal use.

  • Non-Sparking and Non-Conducting

No metal content means no spark risk in hazardous or explosive atmospheres. Also electrically non-conducting.

  • Low Elongation

Dyneema has very low stretch under load, providing positive load response and predictable handling comparable to wire rope.

Dyneema Rope — Questions Answered

How does Dyneema rope compare to wire rope?

Dyneema rope matches wire rope breaking load at typically 1/7th the weight. It floats, doesn’t corrode, and won’t spark. Wire rope remains preferred for high-temperature environments and applications requiring minimal elongation under very heavy loads. Both have their place — the right choice depends on your application.

Yes, Dyneema ropes are used for lifting in specific applications — particularly offshore cranes, marine salvage, and environments where weight or spark risk are concerns. Ensure the rope assembly is correctly terminated and rated for your lifting application.
