A rock drilling rod (also called drill steel, drifter rod, or drill pipe) is the steel bar that connects the rock drill (drifter) to the drill bit in a Top Hammer drilling system. Its function is to transmit the percussive impact energy and rotational torque from the drifter to the bit, while also channelling the flushing medium (air or water) to clear drill cuttings from the hole. Drill rods are a critical consumable in any Top Hammer drilling operation — rod condition directly affects penetration rate, hole accuracy, and equipment longevity.

Rock drilling rods must be manufactured from high-grade steel with controlled hardness through the shank, thread, and rod body. Incorrect hardness leads to premature breakage or thread failure.

Service life depends on rock conditions, drilling practice, and flushing efficiency. Under normal conditions, a quality MF rod should drill 500-1500 metres before replacement. Signs of wear include thread galling, bending, shank erosion, and reduced penetration rate.
